추억의 영어 참고서

김열함의 영어정해, 송성문의 성문종합영어, 유진의 영어구문론 등 추억의 7080 고교 영어 참고서가 생각난다. 세종특별시의 Y형 때문이다. Y형이 영어참고서를 마치 영어정해처럼 작성하고 계셨다. 장애인 고등학생 등하교 셔틀 봉사를 하면서 그 학생의 영어 공부를 도와주신다고. 역시 Y형답다. Y형, 이렇게 호칭하니 맥그리거(Douglas Murray McGregor, 1906–1964) 교수의 Y이론이 생각난다. 맥그리거의 XY이론은 동기부여를 설명하는 사회심리학 이론, Y는 자발적인 성선의 인간형이다. 하하. 인터넷에서 맥그리거를 찾아보니 이렇게 나온다(위키피디아).

Douglas Murray McGregor(1906–1964) was a management professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and president of Antioch College from 1948 to 1954. He also taught at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. His 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise had a profound influence on education practices.

 

Douglas McGregor is a contemporary of Abraham Maslow. Likewise, he also contributed much to the development of the management and motivational theory. He is best known for his Theory X and Theory Y as presented in his book ‘The Human Side of Enterprise’(1960), which proposed that manager’s individual assumptions about human nature and behaviour determined how individual manages their employees

 

Theory X and Theory Y are theories of human motivation and management. They were created and developed by Douglas McGregor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, initially presented at a management conference in 1957, and developed during the 1960s. These two theories describe contrasting models of workforce motivation applied by managers in human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational communication and organizational development. According to the models, the two opposing sets of general assumptions of how workers are motivated form the basis for two different managerial styles. Theory X stresses the importance of strict supervision, external rewards, and penalties: in contrast, Theory Y highlights the motivating role of job satisfaction and encourages workers to approach tasks without direct supervision.

 

하하. 너는 영어구문론과 성문종합영어로 공부했고 영어정해도 친구한테 빌려서 좀 보긴 했는데, 그 땐 그 깨알 같은 영문법 설명이 너무 답답했었는데, 당시 사회교육방송에서 연세대 나건석 교수의 “쓴 대로 말한 대로” 강의를 5년 듣고 그래도 중학영어에서 고교영어로 들어갈 수 있었지. 하하. English is a queer language.

 

어제 성선학파 Y형이 만들어 고교생에게 제공하신다는 그 원고를 보고, 손주를 위해 영문법 책을 준비하신다는 “영어에 대한 소고”라는 원고를 보고 감탄해 마지않았다. 그리고 집에 와서 7080 영어 참고서를 다시 꺼내보았다. <영어구문론> 서문에는 다음과 같은 속담이 나온다. “The drops hollows the stone, not by its force, but by its frequency.” 2018. 4. 29(일).
