누가 대장인가?

The Boss 대장

 처음 회사에 입사했을 때 직속 상사분이 복사해서 직원들한테 주신 자료인데 인간관계에서 너무 우쭐대고 잘난 척하면 안 된다는 교훈을 주는 것 같아 의미가 매우 심장하게 느껴졌어요. 같이 해석 한번 해 보아요.

When the Lord made man, all the parts of the body argued over who would be boss.

조물주가 인간을 만들 때 각 신체부위가 서로 자기가 대장이라고 다투게 했어요.

The brain explained that since he controlled all the parts of the body he should be boss.

뇌는, 자기가 모든 신체 부위를 통제하므로 자기가 대장이라고 말했어요.

The legs argued that they should be boss, since they could take the body anywhere it wanted to go.

두 다리는, 자기들이 몸을 원하는 곳으로 데리고 가니 자기들이 당연히 대장이라고 우겼어요.

The stomach countered with explanation that since he digested all the food, he kept the body healthy, therefore he should be boss.

위는, 자기가 음식물을 소화시켜 몸을 건강하게 유지하도록 하니 자기가 대장이 되어 마땅하다고 받아쳤어요.

The eyes said without vision man could not see where he was going, therefore they should be boss.

양 눈은, 몸은 보지 못하면 아무 데도 갈 수 없으니 당연히 자기들이 대장이라고 말했어요.

Then the rectum spoke up and applied for the job.

그 때 작은창자가 나서서 자기가 하는 일을 치켜세웠어요.

The other parts of the body all laughed so hard the rectum closed up.

그 때 신체의 모든 부위들이 너무 크게 비웃는 바람에 작은창자가 그만 문을 닫아버렸어요.

After a few days, the brain got foggy, the leg became wobbly, the stomach became ill, and the eyes crossed and could not see.

며칠 후 뇌는 안개처럼 몽롱하고, 두 다리는 흔들리고, 위는 아프고, 두 눈은 저절로 감겨서 볼 수가 없었어요.

Soon they all conceded that the rectum should be boss.

얼마 못가 모든 신체부위는 작은창자가 대장이라고 인정했어요.

Which just goes to prove that you don't have to be a brain to be boss, just an ass.

엉덩이가 대장이 될 수 없는 것처럼 뇌도 대장이 될 수 없다는 게 증명되었네요.
